Mission of the Department:
The mission of the Department of
English Language and Literature is the pursuit of excellence in
teaching and research in the areas of English language,
linguistics, literature and translation. The department also has
a commitment to teaching and research in a range of other modern
languages and in cultural studies. The department aims to
prepare students to participate effectively in developing the
local as well as the world community by helping them develop a
global outlook, cultural awareness, and intercultural
communication skills.

The Department envisages its role as an empowering institution. We
aim to be a department that produces graduates with a strong
capacity to achieve success, promote their own learning, and conduct
research in both linguistics and literature.
Objectives of the Department:

department strives to

Develop students’ skills in speaking,
listening, reading, writing and translating English.

Provide students with the
necessary tools and methods for linguistic analysis and literary
appreciation and criticism..

Develop the students’ skills and abilities in
analytical and critical thinking to help them analyse and
interpret texts and understand cultural diversity.

Promote students’ ability to relate their
studies to relevant contemporary and local issues.

Promote students’ aesthetic taste and literary
appreciation.

Provide quality teaching to make our graduates
highly desirable for recruitment in the labour market.

Develop students’ research and independent
learning skills to help them promote their own competencies.
These objectives are achieved through both classroom and
IT-supported instruction. All courses have electronic materials that
the students can access on campus and at home. They are intended to
support students’ autonomy.
